Alabama Homeschool Laws
The primary option outlined below is the Alabama “Private School” option. A private school may be set up by a parent for their child or they may operate as an extension of an existing private school.
Ages 6 to 17
None, except a “good faith effort” for physical education.
Yes.
The private school must report names and addresses of all school age children enrolled to the city or county superintendent within 5 days of the start of public school.
The school is also required to report enrollment or absences on a weekly basis.
Yes. The principal teacher must main an attendance register for every school day of the year.
Not required.
Yes, but medical or religious exemptions are allowed.
In addition to the “Private School” option, Alabama students can also choose a private tutor (A Certified Teacher) or a church school affiliation. These options have different reporting requirements, qualifications, etc.
