HB183: Home school students in public career and technical education (CTE) programs
- Sponsors: Rep. Susan DuBose (R), with Reps. Collins and Garrett
- Status: Died at sine die. Passed the House 89-2 on February 3, 2026, and was reported out of the Senate Finance and Taxation Education Committee with amendments on March 4, 2026, but never received a final Senate vote.
- On a committee agenda: Yes (House Education Policy; Senate Finance and Taxation Education)
- Synopsis: Starting in the 2027-28 school year, students taught under the private tutor, private school, or church school options could take career and technical education classes at their public school. They would enroll as nontraditional students and pay the same course fees as other students, and full classes would fill with current public school students first. Stand-alone CTE schools could choose whether to take part. The Senate committee amendments added a residency rule, with local boards allowed to admit students from outside the district.
- Rating: 👍 Decreases burdens. Participation is optional, adds no new requirements for families who don’t use it, and opens hands-on job training to homeschoolers.
