Alaska Approves 20 Scholarship Groups for New Federal Tax Credit
Local Homeschool News: Alaska
Alaska families have a new source of school choice help on the way. The state has chosen to take part in the federal scholarship tax credit (Internal Revenue Code section 25F), starting in tax year 2027. The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development now lists 20 approved K-12 scholarship granting organizations, or SGOs, on its SGO page.
The approved groups include Alaska Students First, the Children’s Scholarship Fund, ACE Scholarships Education Freedom Tax Credit SGO, and the Orthodox Christian Scholarship Fund, among others. Once approved, an SGO can start organizing its scholarship program, building partnerships with Alaska schools and education providers, and preparing to raise contributions starting January 1, 2027.
Here is how the credit works. Taxpayers who give to a qualified SGO can claim a federal tax credit of up to $1,700, or $3,400 for married couples filing jointly. Alaska was on the IRS list of participating states as of October 22, 2026 (IRS).
What does this mean for homeschoolers? Each SGO sets up its own scholarship program within the federal rules. So if you are interested, contact the SGOs directly and ask which students and which costs their scholarships cover. Alaska families can also keep using the state’s correspondence school allotments, which are covered on our Alaska School Choice Options page.
Nonprofits that want to apply can still send a letter of interest and their IRS 501(c)(3) letter to SGO@alaska.gov. The state reviews applications on a rolling basis.
