Colorado Opens Applications for Scholarship Groups Under Federal Tax Credit

Local Homeschool News: Colorado

Colorado is getting ready for the new federal scholarship tax credit. The state has told the IRS it will take part starting in tax year 2027. The Colorado Department of Revenue is now collecting applications from scholarship granting organizations, or SGOs. Applications are due by November 30, 2026, and the state will send its list of SGOs to the IRS by January 1, 2027 (Colorado Department of Revenue).

Once the credit begins on January 1, 2027, taxpayers who give to a qualified SGO can claim a federal tax credit of up to $1,700, or $3,400 for married couples filing jointly (IRS). Each SGO will set up its own scholarship program within the federal rules. Homeschool families who are interested should watch for the state’s SGO list and ask each group what it covers. Nonprofits with questions can email DOR_SGOApplications@state.co.us.

There is also news about part-time public programs for homeschool students. A 2026 law, SB26-023, changed how these programs work (Colorado General Assembly). It created a new approval process for programs that operate outside their authorizer’s boundaries. As of July 15, 2026, the Colorado Department of Education had received 47 applications from those programs and planned rulemaking for the fall (CDE). To find a program near you, contact your local school district, charter school, or BOCES (CDE).
