Gettysburg Invites Homeschool Families to a Civil War Field Hospital Day
Local Homeschool News: Pennsylvania
Here is a field trip worth putting on your calendar now. Gettysburg National Military Park will host a Homeschool Day on Friday, March 12, 2027, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The inclement weather date is Friday, March 19 (National Park Service).
Families will time-travel to the George Spangler Farm as it becomes the 11th Corps Hospital on July 1, 1863. Each student receives an identity card of a real person connected to the farm. Students then discover that person’s story as they rotate through four learning stations: Family Farm, 11th Corps Soldiers, Wounded in Battle, and Doctors and Nurses.
Afterward, families get a self-guided Field Hospital Scavenger Hunt. Students who return it to the Visitor Center receive a special certificate.
Space is limited, so registration is required, and each family must register separately. The park asks families to email the name and age or grade of each participant and the number of chaperones. Contact details are on the park’s Homeschool Days page. The program is recommended for ages 8 to 14, and the park asks families to make other plans for children under 5. For more on homeschooling in the state, see our Pennsylvania Homeschool Laws page.
