Status as of November 7, 2026: There are no homeschool bills pending in the Louisiana Legislature. The 2026 regular session has ended, and two homeschool-related bills became law.

Next session: The 2027 regular session is scheduled for April 12 to June 10, 2027, with prefiling from January 25, 2027 (MultiState). We check Louisiana weekly, and daily during session.

HB 363: Public School Activities for Home Study and Virtual Students (Act 545, Signed Into Law)

  • Status: Approved by House Education (March 24, 2026) and Senate Education (May 7, 2026); passed the Senate 33-0 on May 21. Signed May 29, 2026 as Act 545; effective August 1, 2026 (Louisiana Legislature: HB 363).

  • Synopsis: Lets students in an approved home study program or a virtual school take part in extracurricular activities and interscholastic athletics at the public school for their attendance zone, trying out in the same manner, time, and place as enrolled students (Act 545 text).
  • Rating: 👍 Decreases burdens. It secures activities access for home study students.

HB 1203: Parent-Driven Learning Microschools (Act 885, Signed Into Law)

  • Sponsors: Rep. Kathy Edmonston, with Reps. Amedee, Broussard, Carlson, Carpenter, Carver, Martinez, Owen, Tarver, and Taylor
  • Status: Amended in Senate Education; the House concurred 73-19 on May 29, 2026. Signed and effective June 8, 2026 as Act 885 (Louisiana Legislature: HB 1203).
  • On a committee agenda: Yes
  • Synopsis: Defines parent-driven learning microschools. Using a home or building for one does not change its zoning or occupancy classification, and such microschools may not be required to register or report to a government agency (Act 885 text).
  • Rating: 👍 Decreases burdens. It protects families who teach together.
