SB 277: Education; Correspondence Students, BSA, Teachers (Died)

  • Sponsor: Senate Education Committee (chair: Sen. Lรถki Gale Tobin)
  • Status: Referred to Senate Education and Finance on March 13, 2026. Heard and held in Senate Education on March 18 and April 13, 2026. It did not pass before the Legislature ended (Alaska Legislature: SB 277).
  • On a committee agenda: Yes (Senate Education, March 18 and April 13, 2026)
  • Synopsis: A broad education bill. According to the sponsor statement, it would have funded correspondence (public homeschool program) students at the same base level as brick-and-mortar students. It would also have required correspondence programs to have cooperative agreements with the district where the student lives. Students leaving a correspondence program could keep textbooks, equipment, and materials bought with their allotment (SB 277 Sponsor Statement).
  • Rating: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Ž Mixed. More funding and keeping materials would help correspondence families. The new cooperative agreement rule could limit which programs families can use. Independent homeschoolers who do not use correspondence programs would not have been affected.
