Huntington Homeschooled Senior Named National Merit Commended Student
Local Homeschool News: New York
Congratulations to AbbeyRose Goldman of Huntington, New York! The homeschooled high school senior has been named a Commended Student in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program (Huntington Patch).
About 34,000 students across the country received this honor for their strong performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. Commended Students rank among the top 50,000 students who took the qualifying test in 2025.
AbbeyRose has been homeschooled since fifth grade. Her family chose a classical approach to education. Her mother said they were also inspired by a desire to connect more as a family. Since her sophomore year, AbbeyRose has taken dual-enrollment courses and earned 36 college credits before finishing high school.
Her interests reach well beyond test scores. She competes in debate, has performed in nearly a dozen local theater productions, and sings in her church choir. She also tutors students in writing, math, and Latin.
“Homeschooling has instilled in me a true passion for learning, not merely to score well academically, but also to pursue knowledge for its own sake,” she told Patch. For more on homeschooling in the state, see our New York Homeschool Laws page.
