Homeschool Chess Players Shine at Hawaii Scholastic Tournament
Local Homeschool News: Hawaii
Homeschool students made a strong showing at a Hawaii chess tournament this fall. The Hawaii Chess Federation held its September 2026 Scholastic Sectional on September 26 at Washington Middle School in Honolulu (Hawaii Chess Federation).
The event had five rounds. Each player got 45 minutes plus a 5-second bonus per move. In all, 95 students took part.
In the K-12 division, homeschooled player Koa Satterfield tied for first with a score of 4.0, sharing the top spot with Leon Nguyen of ʻIolani School.
Homeschool teams also placed in two divisions. A homeschool team took third place in the K-8 team standings. Another took third in the K-12 team standings, behind ʻIolani School and Punahou School.
Chess is a great fit for homeschool learning. It builds focus, planning, and patience. Tournaments also give students a chance to meet peers from across the island. The federation holds scholastic events through the school year, so check its site for upcoming dates.
